2021-2022 Changes to LUSD Bus Routes

The nationwide school bus driver shortage, budget constraints, increasing costs, and a decline in LUSD bus ridership has necessitated a reduction in LUSD’s school bus routes.  Effective July 1, 2021, LUSD is offering regular transportation services to the two (2) geographical areas with the most significant bus ridership: Barona Indian Reservation and Navy Housing.

This decision was made after considering information from staff and input from the LUSD community during the Board’s May 13, 2021 and May 24, 2021 meetings.  At its June 17, 2021 meeting, the Board heard public comment regarding the proposed transportation changes and took action to discontinue general education school bus routes effective July 1, 2021, with the exception of routes to and from the Navy housing and the Barona Indian Reservation, irrespective of school site, and any supplementary routes that can be fulfilled within this primary route schedule.

The recommendation to reduce transportation services was difficult, as we recognize that this may inconvenience some families. In addition to the factors identified above, the recommendation took into consideration that:

  • Seven percent (7%) of LUSD students used the District’s transportation services impacted by this change;
  • Approximately 10 school bus drivers retired over the past year and the nationwide school bus driver shortage has undermined LUSD’s efforts to secure drivers; and

LUSD offers Extended Student Services (ESS) programs providing student supervision from 6am to 6pm at every school site.
