Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an “Intra-district” transfer and an “Inter-district” transfer?

An “Intra-district” transfer is a transfer between two schools within the Lakeside Union School District and is based on your home address (often referred to as School of Choice). For example, if you live in Lakeside and your school of residence is Lakeview, but you want your child(ren) to go to Lakeside Farms, you would need to complete an Intra-district transfer request.

An “Inter-district” transfer is a transfer between two districts and is based on your home address. For example, if you live in El Cajon and your district of residence is in the Cajon Valley School District, but you want your child(ren) to attend Lakeside Middle School, you would need to complete an Inter-district transfer request.

Where can I get the transfer forms?

Intra-district transfer forms are available on the district’s website (www.lsusd.net) and are submitted in person or via email to transfers@lsusd.net. Inter-district transfer forms are available on the district’s website and at all other school district offices (e.g. Cajon Valley School District’s district office). If you are applying for an inter-district transfer to attend a school in the Lakeside Union School District from another school district, you must first have your district of residence sign the transfer to release you. You must then submit the request to LUSD by returning it, in person to the Lakeside district office at 12335 Woodside Avenue, Lakeside or by email to transfers@lsusd.net.

What are the timelines for transfer requests?

Transfer requests may be submitted at any time in the current school year for the current school year. For current year requests, you will be provided a response in writing within 30 calendar days. For interdistrict transfer requests, the 30 day timeline begins when LUSD receives an IDT application for which a student has been released from their district of residence.

Transfers for the following school year have application windows:

  • The Intra-District/School of Choice transfer request window for the following school year will open on December 1st and close on February 1st of each year.
  • The Inter-District transfer request window for the following school year will open on February 1st and close on April 1st of each year.

Transfer forms received during the above windows will be placed based on space availability and transfer criteria. If applications exceed space available during the transfer window, a random, unbiased selection process will be used to determine the order of acceptance.  Please note that we will continue accepting transfers after the enrollment windows close, however those will be considered late applications and will be processed in the order received.

When Intra-district transfers/School of Choice applications for the following school year are received between December 1 and February 1, every effort will be made to respond within 60 days.  Applications received outside the application window and until May 31st will be considered late applications and will continue to be considered with the district making every effort to respond within 60 days.  Intra-district transfers/School of Choice applications, for the following school year received after May 31st (including
those received when school offices are closed for the summer) will be considered late applications and will be reviewed after school starts and once enrollment numbers stabilize, usually 4 weeks after the beginning of the school year. Approval of any application is not guaranteed.   Any application received on or after the first day of school will be considered a current school year request.

When Inter-district transfers for the following school year are received within the application window every effort will be made to respond within 70 days. In situations where a lottery is required, it may not be possible to respond within 70 days and some additional time will be required.  If the request is received outside the application window and no later than 15 calendar days before the start of the new school year, students will be placed on a waitlist and LUSD will make every effort to notify parents of its final decision no later than 14 calendar days after the start of the new school year.  For applications received within 14 days before the start of the school year, the district will respond within 30 days.

Requests for releases on inter-district transfer forms (transfers to leave the Lakeside Union School District) will be processed on a weekly basis.

How do I know when my transfer has been approved?

Results will be shared via email. If the transfer has been approved, you must enroll your child within 10 days from the date of the transfer approval notification. If the transfer request has been placed on a waitlist, there is no guarantee your student will be accepted.  As such, you must enroll your child at your school of residence.

Do I have to fill out a transfer every year?

In general, no. Transfer forms are required to be completed under these circumstances:

  • TK through 5th Grade Enrollment – You would fill out a transfer form once for this grade span if you desire to attend a school site other than your school of residence. This transfer, if granted,
only applies to the school for which you have applied. If you desire to move to a different school, you will need to complete a new transfer request form.
  • Middle School Enrollment – A new transfer form is required if the middle school or academy is not your school of residence.
  • Change in Residence – If you move at any point to a different school or district of residence (mid-year or between school years), you must complete a new transfer request form.
  • Change in Desired School – If you are currently attending a school on an approved transfer and are requesting to move to a different school site, a new transfer form is required.

Can I submit both an intra-district transfer request for LUSD and also an inter-district transfer request to attend school in another district at the same time?

You are welcome to complete both an Intra-district and Inter-district transfer request for your child. However, if your intra-district transfer to an LUSD school is accepted, you will need to confirm your decision by registering at that school within 10 days of notification of approval (see #4 above). If you choose to pursue your inter-district request to a different district, please notify LUSD as soon as possible so that we may offer available space to other students.

Can I put more than one school on the transfer form?

Yes; however, be sure to identify which school is your first and second choice. We will do our best to accommodate based on the information you provide.

Can I complete one transfer form for my sibling children?

No; each child must have a transfer form completed.

If an older sibling has already been approved to attend a school on a transfer, does that mean that my younger child will automatically be approved?

No; each application is considered individually for program space and enrollment for siblings is not guaranteed. However, siblings are given priority when applications are submitted within the window and when there is space.

What are the reasons that my transfer may be denied?

Transfers may be denied due to school/program capacity, unsatisfactory attendance, unsatisfactory behavior, excessive tardiness, and/or false or misleading information provided to the district.

If my transfer is denied, what is the appeals process?

If a request for a transfer is denied, the student’s parents/guardians may file an appeal by coming into the district office or sending an email to transfer@lsusd.net. You will receive a notification regarding your appeal status within 15 days of your appeal.

If the appeal is still denied for an inter-district transfer you may appeal to the county office of education within 30 days of receipt of the first official notice of denial of the transfer.  Intra-district appeal decisions are final.

What are the conditions under which my transfer may be revoked or rescinded?

Students attending a district school other than their school of residence are expected to maintain consistent attendance, good behavior and compliance with the district’s code of conduct for student behavior. Failure to do so may result in denial or revocation of the transfer application. Poor attendance and/or behavior incidents are cause for a transfer to be revoked and/or not approved.

Is transportation provided if my student’s transfer is approved?

No, transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and is not provided for transfers.

Are there any additional steps for Lakeside Immersion Programs?

Yes, for immersion at Lakeview and Riverview International Academy, you must put your student on the immersion interest list on each school’s website.
