California Education Code (EC) Section 32281(a) requires every kindergarten through grade twelve school, public and public charter, including community and court schools, to develop and maintain a Comprehensive School Safety Plan (also known as a CSSP) designed to address campus risks, prepare for emergencies, and create a safe, secure learning environment for students and school personnel. The law requires designated stakeholders to annually engage in a systematic planning process to develop strategies and policies to prevent and respond to potential incidents involving emergencies, natural and other disasters, hate crimes, violence, active assailants/intruders, bullying and cyberbullying, discrimination and harassment, child abuse and neglect, discipline, suspension and expulsion, and other safety aspects.

Riverview International Academy’s two campuses review and revise the Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) on a yearly basis, as part of the School Site Council’s functions. The CSSP includes the following components:

Strategies to create and maintain a positive school climate, promote school safety, increase pupil achievement, prioritize mental health and interventions, restorative justice, and positive behavior interventions and supports

Safety Drill procedures (fire/evacuation drills, earthquake/drop, cover, and hold drills, and secure campus and lockdown drills)

Assessment of the current status of school crime or crimes at school-related functions

Child abuse reporting procedures

Disaster procedures, routine and emergency plans, and crisis response plan with adaptations for pupils with disabilities

Earthquake emergency procedures

Procedures to allow a public agency, including American Red Cross, to use school buildings, grounds, and equipment for mass care and welfare shelters during an emergency

Suspension and expulsion policies

Procedures to notify teachers of dangerous pupils

Discrimination and harassment policy that includes hate crime reporting procedures and policies

Schoolwide dress code if it exists, that includes prohibition of gang-related apparel

Procedures for safe ingress and egress of students, parents/guardians, and school employees to and from school site

Policies enacted to maintain a safe and orderly environment

Rules and procedures on school discipline

Procedures for conducting tactical responses to criminal incidents, including individuals with guns on school campuses and at school-related functions

Instructional Continuity Plan in the event of emergencies

Other requirements, as mandated by California State Law

Our school conducts regular safety drills and shares data with staff and parents at SSC meetings. If you would like to learn more about our CSSP, we recommend attending an SSC meeting at our school or setting up an appointment with the Principal to review a public copy of the CSSP.

Furthermore, we maintain open lines of communication with parents and guardians. To stay informed, it is essential that you keep your emergency contact information up to date so you can receive all safety notifications without delay. We recommend that you update your information on our Infinite Campus Parent Portal and ensure that email messages from the school and district are not going to your spam or junk folders. For security reasons, we cannot accept changes over the phone.

In the event of a school emergency or natural disaster, families should be familiar with our student release procedures. Instructions for reuniting with your child will be provided by the school or district. Please do not come to the school based solely on media and social media reports, as they may contain inaccurate information.

Our top priority is the safe and orderly dismissal of all students. Please be aware that parking near the school may be extremely limited. You may need to park farther away and follow the directions of first responders. Do not double park, as it could obstruct emergency vehicle access to the school.

To ensure the safety of every student, we must document to whom each child is released. When you arrive, you will be directed to a check-in area. A staff member (runner) will escort your child from the student supervision area to the designated Release Gate, where you will be reunited.

In some extreme situations, a student reunification site may be established off-campus in coordination with emergency responders. Regardless of the location, all students must be formally signed out before leaving. You may be asked to show photo identification, so please be prepared with a government-issued photo identification card.

Do not remove your child from the school or reunification site without following the official sign-out process. While we understand your desire to be reunited with your child quickly, these procedures are vital to ensuring that every student is safe and accounted for at all times.

Finally, please make sure that all individuals listed on your child’s Emergency Card are familiar with these procedures. Their awareness and cooperation are crucial during an emergency.

The Lakeside Union School District has established comprehensive emergency procedures to ensure student safety during all types of emergencies.
