My name is Michelle Dobyns, and I’ve had the privilege of teaching at Lakeside Middle School for 26 years! I’m a graduate of San Diego State University and earned a Master’s degree in Instructional Leadership and Curriculum Design. I have two children attending school and, as a native San Diegan, enjoy rooting for the Chargers (even though they're in Los Angeles) with my husband.

It is a pleasure to have your child as a member of our class. Sixth grade is a very important year as students make the transition from elementary to middle school. Class work and homework will be more demanding, requiring more time and effort than in the past. I’m looking forward to working with you toward a common goal – to help your child experience a productive, stimulating, and successful year as a sixth grade student at Lakeside Middle School.

A positive learning environment requires structure and discipline.

Our class rules are:
·Be in your seat, before the tardy bell rings, ready to work.
·Bring all necessary materials to class every day (planner, homework, and 2 sharpened pencils - no pens
allowed unless provided in class for notes).
·Listen and follow directions the first time given.
·Please ask questions during appropriate times if you don’t understand.
·Do your personal best on every assignment.
·Respect the rights of others to learn.

Our Homework ("Practice") policy is:
·There will be “Practice” assigned daily.
·When absent, you are responsible for completing any and all missed work. (both class work and Practice)
·Please check Jupitergrades.com to obtain absent homework assignments.
·I will be available for weekly tutoring during Wednesdays at lunch.  I encourage you to attend the
Homework Club through the LATER Program for additional help.

Students' progress and citizenship will be updated weekly on Jupitergrades.com.  Please let me know of any way I can help you, or if you have any questions or suggestions. I look forward to working with you and your child.

My name is John Dungan and I have lived in San Diego County for most of my life. I went to Santana High School in Santee and graduated with honors and a passion for Math and Music. I continue my education at SDSU where I received a Bachelors of Arts in Math with a minor in Philosophy. I received my teaching credential at SDSU as well, and began my teaching career in Lakeside as a long term substitute at Lakeside Middle School and Tierra Del Sol. In 2013 I got my first full-time teaching position at Lakeside Middle School and have been working here ever since.
My love for Music has always been a big part of my life. I started playing instruments with the piano when I was 3 years old. I played Concert Bass for my school orchestra during elementary school, and have been playing guitar since I was 13. I also play the bass guitar, mandolin, and ukulele; pretty much any string instrument! I work with the after school guitar program here at Lakeside Middle School sharing this passion with those who want to learn how to play. Learning how to play the guitar and starting a band was one of the most fun and exciting things I have done in my life, and giving this opportunity to students is a very rewarding experience to me.
In my brief career as a teacher I have grown so much and have a lot to learn still, but I have found that this is the most rewarding job I could have. Seeing students have their "light bulb" moments always gets me to smile and I love to share in their success. I hope that I can spend my entire career working here at Lakeside Middle School, as I do call this place "home".

The LMS art studio is an exciting place to discover the “artist within”. In class students are challenged through creative exploration designed to help them develop artistically and academically. Students incorporate numerous problem-solving skills as they manipulate media and experiment with techniques while learning the elements of art and principles of design. Students learn to analyze and critique artworks, their own and others, as they explore art history, past and present. Assignments and activities enhance and support Common Core State Standards and address the visual arts standards (pdf file).

From the time I was seven years old, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. For the past 18 years, I have taught elementary and middle school. This is my fifth year at LMS!

I received my B.A., teaching credential, masters, and administrative credential from San Diego State University. Being a life-long learner is essential to my profession, and I look forward to the new educational challenge I will pursue.

In my free time, I enjoy training for races. I have ran several races over the past seven years including the "Silver Strand" half-marathon, three "Rock n' Roll" half-marathons, "Tinkerbell" half-marathon and "The Pixie Dust Challenge at Disneyland, and one full marathon in Carlsbad. Running is an activity that both my son and I enjoy.

I have an 13 year old son who keeps me busy with spending time with friends, helping with homework, and cleaning up after him!

I look forward to my third year at LMS and teaching and learning with all of you!

Hello, my name is Ms. Hudson and I welcome you to a new school year filled with opportunity!  I teach 7th and 8th grade Social Studies in Spanish in addition to being a 7th grade CORE (Language Arts & Social Studies) teacher.  Having taught for nearly twenty years, I have countless student-centered educational beliefs, but I've narrowed it to my purpose as a teacher:

To provide your child two things: first, the opportunity to learn the content; the other is to provide plenty of opportunities to advance reading proficiency, instill critical thinking, and extend their writing skills.

I look forward to working with you to ensure your child’s success, not just in our class, but in all academic classes. I am confident that this will be a great year, full of challenge and learning, in a welcoming classroom environment.  Hope to see you at Back to School Night.

The Basics

My Name is Miss Casey McNellen and I am excited to be teaching 6th & 7th grade science and 7th and 8th grade drama (along with Mr Mull and Mrs. Ward). I enjoy musical theater, volleyball, traveling & being with friends and family. This was my first year officially teaching, but my 8th year working for the Lakeside Union School District. I am excited to make this an amazing school year!

My Childhood

I grew up in Lakeside, and I have a strong connection to this community. I love Lakeside! I attended Tierra Del Sol middle school and then graduated with Honors from El Capitan. Teaching in the same district I grew up in is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited to be at such an amazing performing arts middle school. LMS has such an awesome, positive staff!

My Education

In May of 2016, I graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education from San Diego State University. In May 2017, I graduated from Alliant International University's Credential program. In August 2017, I obtained my Masters of the Arts in Education.

My Teaching Philosophy

I am a very positive person. It is important in my classroom for the children to feel safe, respected, and cared for. When it comes to Science, I focus on the 5 E's in my classroom-- Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. I am a big believer in students asking the right questions as opposed to finding the correct answer. I think in general this helps guide them into becoming well-rounded thinkers. I am thrilled to be at Lakeside Middle School and I know this will be an awesome year!

I am so excited to be here at LMS, encouraging future artists and leaders to be their best selves.  In the art studio, we will focus on developing the “Artist’s Habits of Mind”, exploring various media (including technology), and making connections to core academic subjects, all while developing our artistic skills.

Arts education prepares students for the future with the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century.  In the art studio, we develop problem solving abilities, including; imagining, creating, and innovating.  We take responsible risks; exploring and experimenting with the intention of learning from successes as well as failures.  We do not consider mistakes a bad thing, rather an experience from which we can grow.  While making art, we learn to persist until we are satisfied with our work.  We seek to become comfortable with ambiguity and the fact that there may be more than one correct answer or solution.  We strive to become flexible as we listen and respond with understanding and empathy.  Students will experience different cultures and time periods throughout history via works of art.

I encourage my students to approach learning with a growth mindset which inspires them to become life-long learners.  There is no way we can know everything or be good at everything right away.  But we can seek to be open-minded and continue to learn, change and grow throughout our lifetimes, enjoying the process of incorporating new information and experiences into our lives and minds.

This is my inaugural year at LMS, and I am excited to be taking on the role of teaching 8th grade English and CORE as well as 6th grade drama!  My overarching goal as a teacher is to help students believe in their potential, be curious, and have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to succeed!  I wish to show my students that many types of successes are possible, and I hope to guide them in developing strength of character and strong motivation!

As for my background, I grew up the daughter of two teachers in New Jersey.  I hold a Bachelor's degree in English (journalism & creative writing), with a minor in educational psychology, and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  I have experience teaching various grades ranging from Pre-K through 12th grade.  This is my ninth year as a teacher.  I am also proud to have substantial experience with and training in singing, dancing, and theater, as well as experience teaching drama, dance, and Orff music!

Educational Philosophy

I believe that students come into the classroom with different backgrounds, dispositions, interests, ability attainment, and perceptions of self-efficacy.  Once in the classroom, they have different motivators, interpret and respond to external factors differently, and exhibit a wide range of expression and understandings of what it means to learn and grow. In my view, students learn best through active, student-directed learning in a motivating environment of choice and voice where learning is centered around the needs, interests, dispositions, and backgrounds of the students and integrates standards in authentic problem-based and discovery learning experiences.  I center my instruction around big ideas, essential questions, and enduring understandings, as students are more engaged when confronted with real-world problems and situations that connect with their interests and experiences.  I also believe that learning can be greatly enhanced when students are exposed to multiple perspectives and models, participate in shared thinking, and are guided to appropriately calibrate their self-expectations to develop their thinking and learning strategies and self-reflect.  I see the end goal as developing self-regulated learning.

In my classroom, each student works at appropriate levels of depth and complexity through the design and implementation of differentiated, student-centered experiences that are based on each student’s unique needs, interests, and strengths.  Curiosity, imagination, experimentation, and creativity are highly valued and encouraged! Seeing my role as that of a guide, my students are aided in becoming more independent by encouraging them to self-monitor their performance.  Problem-solving, critical thinking, goal-setting, and organizational skills are taught explicitly.  Constant feedback from peers and myself aid in this process.

Through emphases on the impacts and influences of individual and group choices, I strive to instill in students a sense of individuality as well as a sense of community.  By addressing current issues, ethics, and social action, I hope to lead my students toward becoming informed and involved members of society.  In order to help students develop their abilities to assess themselves and the world around them in an intentional and meaningful way, I encourage students to challenge their own beliefs, understandings, and actions and to back up their decisions with sound rationales.  Above all, I am committed to nurturing a passion for learning and instilling a sense of significance that motivates students to reach their maximum potential!  As an educator, I seek to give my students a relevant, individualized education that inspires them to be lifelong, self-motivated, and active learners who value social responsibility.

Classroom Description

My classroom is an environment in which collaboration, voice, responsibility, leadership, and ownership are deeply valued.  My classroom is also one in which risk-taking and reflection are encouraged by fostering trusting relationships, establishing a respectful environment, and providing appropriate guidelines.  Along with this, I integrate studies; maintain a constant focus on the relevance of ideas, concepts, and skills being studied and practiced; and encourage students to make connections to universal concepts and to their own lives.   Differentiating the presentation, process, and products of learning is my common practice.  In order to plan projects, lessons, activities, and roles, I use a variety of assessments to take into account student interests, ability levels, and learning styles.  Within a given area of learning, students in my class may choose their own topics to research, paths by which to gain knowledge and understanding, and/or the products through which to demonstrate learning and skills.  Through the provision of creative and differentiated activities and projects, I encourage meaningful learning that challenges students and allows every student to develop all aspects of his or her being.

Lastly but most importantly, students' families are deeply valued as the students' main influencers!  I encourage communication and feedback to personalize your child's learning experience!  You know them better than I do, so please share anything that you think may be beneficial!  I'm here to support!  Please also note that homework will mostly entail reviewing posted content (e.g. articles, videos) and participating in discussions on Haiku.  This work is meant to prepare students for class activities, readings, and discussions so that we can maximize class time and get into more depth (due to the preparatory homework)!

I began my teaching career in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where I taught 4th grade and coordinated academic and placement programs for gifted and talented students at Stonehurst Elementary School. Before coming to Lakeside Middle School, I had the privilege of working for three years at an award winning charter middle school here in San Diego.

• In 7th grade English and History, students will be reading, writing, and discussing text everyday. In addition to thinking critically about non fiction, literature, history, and the arts, students will be working to master a variety of writing skills. Please see the course syllabus for more information about class expectations!

• In 6th grade drama & 7/8 drama, we have three goals: 1) BE KIND & ENCOURAGING TO ONE ANOTHER  2) HAVE FUN  3) PUT ON A PRODUCTION

We have a fantastic time together in drama, and many students create friendships that last a lifetime.

I am Lakeside Middle School's number one fan! I feel so lucky to work at a school that truly feels like a second home. If you wander the halls of LMS, you will see happy teachers, happy school staff, and happy kids. We are a cheerful & spirited school! Don't forget to wear your Converse and show your LMS pride!
