Hello and welcome :) I have been working in the Lakeside Union School District for the past 24 years.  Currently I am teaching 6th and 8th grade Physical Education, as well as ASB here at TDS and have been for the last 18 years.   In 2011, I was named Teacher of the Year for the Lakeside School District.  I believe that my success in education over the years is due to the combination of my commitment to make Tierra del Sol the very best it can be and the wonderful families that call Lakeside home.   I set the highest expectations possible for my class and continually strive to ensure that my students receive the very best education.  My class will hit the ground running the very first day of PE and we will not stop in our pursuit of life-long fitness.

7th Grade Science

I am so excited to be at TdS working in the amazing science department.  TdS has committed to fully implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  This is a very exciting time for Science education and I am looking forward to a very dynamic year exploring real world phenomena as we integrate Life,Earth, and Physical science.  This past summer our Lakeside Union science department received a $20,000 grant that we will be using to incorporate The River Park into our 7th grade curriculum as we develop good environmental citizens.  It is going to be a great year in Science at TdS.

CORE- English/Social Studies/6th grade

I have taught many grades at several different schools in my nineteen years with Lakeside Union School District, and I am happy to again be teaching 6th grade CORE at TdS this year.

In my free time I enjoy walking, hiking,  yoga, reading, working out, growing food, visiting with friends, and staying active in all sorts of ways.   In the summer you can find me swimming at the beach, working around my house, and travelling-- usually to a foreign destination.   I love seeing new places and have frequently visited Central America and Mexico where I practice Spanish, and experience life in a different culture.

As far as my own formal education goes, in 1984 I completed a B.A. in Psychology at Stanislaus State.  In 1986, I earned an M.A.  in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Northridge State.  I spent some years working with teenagers in residential treatment facilities before returning to school for my teaching credential, which I have held since 1998.  I  also completed requirements for the Preliminary Administrative Credential in 2010 through San Diego State.   I love to learn and share my love of learning with the students in my classes.

I very much appreciate the unique personalities and talents of all the students in my classroom, and enjoy being a part of their social and academic growth. My goal is to be an engaging and effective teacher who challenges students to become their best.  I keep in mind that the students in my classroom today will be the leaders in our businesses, communities, country tomorrow.   As such I hold them to high standards.  Sixth grade is an important transition for students and it is necessary that they are both challenged and supported to make the growth necessary to be successful in subsequent years of middle and high school.  "It's not supposed to be easy,"  I tell my students often.  But I do strive to make the learning in my classroom collaborative, meaningful, and enjoyable.  Welcome.

Instilling that passion for learning and conservation in my students is most important as an educator. Besides teaching you can find me traveling: Australia, Baja, and Malaysian Borneo were some of my most recent trips.  Other than that, I’ll be at the beach with my dog, Gigi, enjoying this California sunshine.

6th Grade Science

My name is Kari Koch and I am a 6th grade science teacher at TdS. This is my first year here at TdS but I have been teaching middle school for 20 years. I am very excited to be here with you.

I am also a member of the Lakeside community and this is the job I have been looking forward to for many years. I am excited to be close to my home, my children and teach in the community in which I live.

I graduated with my BA in Exercise Science in 1997 from Fort Lewis College in Durango Colorado. In 2012 I earned my Masters of Teaching degree with emphasis on Educational Technology from National University.

This 6th grade Science course is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. We are one of the few school district in California who are implementing this new way of thinking into our Science curriculum. You will see that it is much more about student thinking than it is about knowing unrelated scientific facts. It is more about students making scientific claims and models and using evidence from data to back up what they say and have conversations about science content. It is about students engineering new and more efficient ways to do things. It is so exciting!!!

This is going to be great year!!!

8th Grade Science

Hello Tierra del Sol Families!!!  Welcome to my website!  8th grade science is a wonderful time in a students life.  Exploring the phenomenon of the physical world, with the integration of Earth and Life Science, will uncover new and exciting knowledge that will stay with your child forever.  I'm looking forward to unveiling new concepts with the kids and listening to respectful and passionate discussions.  Welcome.

I have worked for the Lakeside School District since the 2001-2002 school year.  I have taught all Middle School science’s, Earth, Life and Physical (I like 8thgrade Physical Science the most), and love having the opportunity to explore and discover science with the kids.  I began my science experience as a young boy when I accidentally found out about combustion.  I’ll just leave it at that.

I started my “grown-up” science experience within a government research and development company, dabbling in LASERs and optical communication.  After working with them for ten years, my desire to teach got the best of me.  I went back to school to get my teaching credential and haven’t looked back since.

I have a Multiple Subject credential and Supplemental credentials in math and science.  I bring real world experience into the classroom, from working in laboratory’s and with project teams, that allows me to facilitate great student collaboration, inquiry and discovery.

6th Grade Math

This is my 4th year at Tierra del Sol Middle School and I am very excited to be teaching 6th and 7th grade math this year. Prior to joining the TDS family, I graduated from UCSD and then went on to get my Master's in Education and teaching credential. I have taught math at Montgomery Middle School, High Tech Middle Media Arts, and Juvenile Hall for the past few years.  I then moved to China for a year and spent that time traveling throughout China and Southeast Asia, teaching, but also learning about the different types of teaching styles and education system on the other side of the world. When I have spare time I like to kick box, play tennis, go snowboarding, travel, and of course spend time with my dog, Rory.

If you are looking for supplies for your child to have in my class for the 2016-17 school year, here are some suggestions to start off:

pencils are the mandatory mode of writing in my class unless otherwise noted (mechanical or regular #2 pencils are both fine)
pens (typically for correcting work)
spiral notebook specifically just for math class (wide ruled or college ruled is fine, but I typically find that wide ruled works better for 6th graders)
folder (with clasps inside to put hole punched paper and flaps on the two sides to put loose paper)
highlighter
white board marker

Here are items we won't be using on a daily basis that might be needed a little later in the year:
Stylus for the iPad (this is strictly optional and usually the student's preference for easier usage)

8th Grade English

I have been blessed to be part of the LSUSD family for the last 14 years, and have worked with the most amazing teachers and principals! For the first 10 years of my career, I found my home at The East County Academy of Learning. This was a school that offered an alternative setting for high school special needs students. I learned so much about good teaching practices and adopted the strong mantra, "ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN"! I also realized the importance of building relationships with my students and that teachers truly can make a difference.

In circumstances outside my control, ECAL was relocated to a new facility and district. This led me to TDS, and my switch to general education. I love TDS!!!! I come to school every day loving my job and my students. The 8th grade team works collaboratively with each other by creating engaging high interest cross-curricular activities. We offer exciting hands on culminating field trips to not just learn content, but apply it in real world applications. The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles and LEGOLAND allow our students these opportunities.

I am the design-thinking guru at TDS and love getting our students to use critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and integrating technology to express their ideas.  I want my students thinking for themselves and solving critical issues using their own thoughts and ideas. The person talking knows the content so let the students talk! I believe by letting them have a voice; they take more ownership of their learning.
