Hello and welcome :) I have been working in the Lakeside Union School District for the past 24 years.  Currently I am teaching 6th and 8th grade Physical Education, as well as ASB here at TDS and have been for the last 18 years.   In 2011, I was named Teacher of the Year for the Lakeside School District.  I believe that my success in education over the years is due to the combination of my commitment to make Tierra del Sol the very best it can be and the wonderful families that call Lakeside home.   I set the highest expectations possible for my class and continually strive to ensure that my students receive the very best education.  My class will hit the ground running the very first day of PE and we will not stop in our pursuit of life-long fitness.

My name is Kim Klinko and I am a 7th and 8th grade science teacher at TdS. 2019-2020 will be my third year at TdS. I began my teaching career in my hometown of Chicago in 2010.  I now call San Diego home and you can find me at the beach or the dog park with my dog, Gigi.

Prior to teaching I had a career in project management working with real estate developers and have a Bachelor Degree in Business Management. In order to change careers I earned a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching as well as a Middle School Science Teaching Certificate. The second Masters Degree I earned is in Biology from Miami University through their Global Field Program.  My field studies combined my love of travel and science and led me to places like Borneo and Australia. I recently became a National Geographic Certified Educator.

As an educator I strive to ignite students’ passion and curiosity by promoting the development of an inquiry-based, discussion-rich science classroom.  My mission is to empower my students to become environmental stewards and become critically thinking, global citizens. My goal is to inspire lifelong learning and curiosity in my students. I want to foster an explorer mindset by bringing diverse, real-world experiences into the classroom.

6th Grade Science

My name is Kari Koch and I am a 6th grade science teacher at TdS. This is my first year here at TdS but I have been teaching middle school for 20 years. I am very excited to be here with you.

I am also a member of the Lakeside community and this is the job I have been looking forward to for many years. I am excited to be close to my home, my children and teach in the community in which I live.

I graduated with my BA in Exercise Science in 1997 from Fort Lewis College in Durango Colorado. In 2012 I earned my Masters of Teaching degree with emphasis on Educational Technology from National University.

This 6th grade Science course is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. We are one of the few school district in California who are implementing this new way of thinking into our Science curriculum. You will see that it is much more about student thinking than it is about knowing unrelated scientific facts. It is more about students making scientific claims and models and using evidence from data to back up what they say and have conversations about science content. It is about students engineering new and more efficient ways to do things. It is so exciting!!!

This is going to be great year!!!

8th Grade Science, Project Lead The Way

Hello Tierra del Sol Families!!!  8th grade science is a wonderful time in a students life.  Exploring the phenomenon of the world around us will uncover new and exciting knowledge that will stay with your child forever.  I'm looking forward to unveiling new concepts with the kids and listening to the respectful, passionate discussions that revolve around them.  Welcome!

I have worked for the Lakeside School District since the 2001-2002 school year.  I have taught all Middle School science’s and love having the opportunity to explore and discover science with the kids.  I began my science experience as a young boy when I accidentally found out about combustion.  I’ll just leave it at that.

I started my “grown-up” science experience within a government research and development company, dabbling in LASERs and optical communication.  After working with them for ten years, my desire to teach got the best of me.  I went back to school to get my teaching credential and haven’t looked back since.

I have a Multiple Subject credential and Supplemental credentials in math and science.  I bring real world experience into the classroom, from working in laboratory’s and with project teams, that allows me to facilitate great student collaboration, inquiry and discovery.

In addition to science, I am one of our Project Lead The Way teachers (PLTW for short).  This program offers any student the opportunity to become familiar with many aspects of the technical science fields.  I teach the Flight and Space strand and the Green Architecture Strand.  This program has so many benefits that can have such a great impact on your student, even if they don't persue a career in science or engineering.

6th Grade Math

This is my 4th year at Tierra del Sol Middle School and I am very excited to be teaching 6th and 7th grade math this year. Prior to joining the TDS family, I graduated from UCSD and then went on to get my Master's in Education and teaching credential. I have taught math at Montgomery Middle School, High Tech Middle Media Arts, and Juvenile Hall for the past few years.  I then moved to China for a year and spent that time traveling throughout China and Southeast Asia, teaching, but also learning about the different types of teaching styles and education system on the other side of the world. When I have spare time I like to kick box, play tennis, go snowboarding, travel, and of course spend time with my dog, Rory.

If you are looking for supplies for your child to have in my class for the 2016-17 school year, here are some suggestions to start off:

pencils are the mandatory mode of writing in my class unless otherwise noted (mechanical or regular #2 pencils are both fine)
pens (typically for correcting work)
spiral notebook specifically just for math class (wide ruled or college ruled is fine, but I typically find that wide ruled works better for 6th graders)
folder (with clasps inside to put hole punched paper and flaps on the two sides to put loose paper)
highlighter
white board marker

Here are items we won't be using on a daily basis that might be needed a little later in the year:
Stylus for the iPad (this is strictly optional and usually the student's preference for easier usage)

8th Grade English

I have been blessed to be part of the LSUSD family for the last 14 years, and have worked with the most amazing teachers and principals! For the first 10 years of my career, I found my home at The East County Academy of Learning. This was a school that offered an alternative setting for high school special needs students. I learned so much about good teaching practices and adopted the strong mantra, "ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN"! I also realized the importance of building relationships with my students and that teachers truly can make a difference.

In circumstances outside my control, ECAL was relocated to a new facility and district. This led me to TDS, and my switch to general education. I love TDS!!!! I come to school every day loving my job and my students. The 8th grade team works collaboratively with each other by creating engaging high interest cross-curricular activities. We offer exciting hands on culminating field trips to not just learn content, but apply it in real world applications. The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles and LEGOLAND allow our students these opportunities.

I am the design-thinking guru at TDS and love getting our students to use critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and integrating technology to express their ideas.  I want my students thinking for themselves and solving critical issues using their own thoughts and ideas. The person talking knows the content so let the students talk! I believe by letting them have a voice; they take more ownership of their learning.

8th Grade Social Studies

Hello! I have enjoyed teaching Social Studies at Tierra del Sol Middle School since 2005. Before that, I taught fifth grade at Lemon Crest Elementary School.

I graduated University of Southern California in 1980, and San Diego State University with a Masters of Educational Leadership degree in 2001. I have also worked as a CPA, Real Estate Broker, and Mortgage Loan Broker. I happen to also be the board president for the Grossmont Union High School District.

This year, my students will be learning eighth grade Social Studies (United States History). Students will also receive instruction on research and writing reports, study skills, and preparing for the rigor and independence expected of high school students.

This is my first year in Lakeside, at Tierra del Sol Middle School. I will be teaching Math 6, Math 7, and a Math support class. While I am relatively new to the world of academic teaching, I have been training and mentoring successful teams for many years as a manager for Starbucks. I had an opportunity to make a career change, so I pursued a career path that combines my love of mathematics with my passion for creating and motivating a community.

Making sure my students learn their math standards is the floor for expectations I have for my classrooms. I intend to push my students to become master problem-solvers and tackle difficult situations with rigor and perseverance. They also may develop a strong tolerance for bad math jokes and puns.

In my personal life, my family added its first little one when my daughter, Penelope, joined the world last December. It has been a whirlwind since then, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
