    • Feel the trunks. They feel kind of spongy. The spongy bark can hold lots of moisture which protects it from heat damage during a fire.
    •  See the shaggy covering on the bark? The shaggy bark is flammable and quickly sends fire up to the canopy of leaves and seed capsules. Several days after a fire the seed capsules open. Papery bark that sheds off also helps “shed’ off insects so they don’t damage the tree.
