Apple TV/SmartBoard Conversion Q & A
-
What about copyright and Google Drive? Can I store videos there?
Posted by:Google Drive allows users to store any files they want but the cloud hosting service actively prevents users from sharing or distributing copyrighted files. While Google doesn't go into the finer details of its detection methods, it uses file-hashes to detect infringing content. For more information, you can go to this website: https://torrentfreak.com/google-drive-uses-hash-matching-detect-pirated-content/ If you have copyrighted material in Drive that belongs to you, you may use it yourself but do not share it with others.

Will we just have TV speakers, or additional speakers?
Posted by:In our test installation, we learned that the TV speakers alone are not loud enough so every TV will be installed with an additional soundbar.
-
Are they being placed at a certain/standard height or is that up to teacher/school?
Posted by:All TVs will be installed at a standard height in elementary and middle school classrooms according to regulations we have to follow from the Division of State Architect (DSA) to ensure the safety of students and staff.
-
Will they be adjustable, or stationary? Will the monitors be able to tilt up/down/left/right?
Posted by:The screens will be stationary.
-
If there is a glare on the screens from windows uncovered, will the site pay for new blinds?
Posted by:Refer to your individual sites.
-
Can we keep the CPU tower temporarily so we can work on the transfer of Notebook files to Drive?
Posted by:The CPU may no longer be updated and poses a security risk to our network. They must be removed when the new devices are installed. Teachers are asked to convert their files as soon as possible, as stated in the January 18th Friday Connect.
-
Can we have the TV's in other rooms for student/staff/parent instruction?
Posted by:All existing SmartBoards will be replaced. All sites have at least one SmartBoard on a mobile stand (usually in the library), that will be replaced with a TV on a mobile stand.
-
Can the district provide a workshop day for converting files, since we need Flash?
Posted by:Flash embedded files/software will no longer be supported. Adobe, the maker of Flash, ended its support this year. It will no longer be supported on any current or future devices. Alternatives can be found in some cases. If you used dice (Flash enabled), there are web pages that have these types of dice. If you used a countdown timer that was Flash, there are web pages out there for that. Not all Flash content has an alternate finding on web pages, but maybe a different type of presentation can be delived for delivery of that content.
-
What generation of Apple TV will we be getting?
Posted by:We will be ordering the most current, 4K Apple TVs.
-
Will the installation interfere with testing?
Posted by:The schedule will not interfere with testing. Teachers should use their laptops to sign in to the testing page, and this can be displayed via Apple TV to the TV monitor. This would look no different than when the PC showed this screen through the projector for kids to see the session ID number that they will join each day.
-
Will we receive detailed training before they are installed?
Posted by:There were two sessions taught by Kent Christiansen at our January PD. The 21st Century facilitators attended these sessions so they could be of help to their staff. Each principal has set up a training at their site with Apple representative, Kent Christiansen. Kent will cover how to use the device itself and how to move Smart Notebook files over to Google Drive and then to the Notebook app. While this soluton will work for 85% of the content that IT tested, Flash interactive features will no longer work. You can reach out for support by emailing appletvhelp@lsusd.net. A work order will automatically be created and Shauna and Kay will be notified. One of them will respond, depending on the nature of the problem.
-
How will the issue of inappropriate content showing up on the Apple TV screensaver be addressed?
Posted by:Apple TVs will be placed in "Conference Mode" so that the icons for music and videos will not show.
-
How much consideration will be given to whiteboard usability and aesthetics?
Posted by:The plan is to place the TV's in the same location as the existing SmartBoard. The Maintenance department will follow up with aesthetics once the contractor is done.
-
If a teacher doesn’t have a whiteboard anymore will the district put one in?
Posted by:At this time we have funding to complete the SmartBoard replacement only and will bring forward the need for whiteboards to the facilities task force for a future classroom need.
-
What amount of storage will the iPad Pros have?
Posted by:The new iPad Pros will have 64GB, which is more than teachers currently have.
-
How do you convert/copy videos to Drive?
Posted by:This information will be provided by Kent Christiansen at his site training and will be included on the district resource page.
-
How will this affect rainy day or hot day lunch in rooms with video playing?
Posted by:These setups are much the same as you have now. The capabilities are about the same, except the newer equipment does not contain the ability to play DVD/BluRAys. We are looking into solutions on creating a Digital Library, but there will be the possibility to stream some videos as needed.
-
Will we be paid for the time it takes to upload and convert existing files?
Posted by:There will be no additional compensation for teachers to convert files.
-
Will we be getting the Apple iPad Pros with the TVs/Monitors if we are in Phase 1?
Posted by:An Apple iPad Pro will come with the TVs/Monitors upon installation.
-
How long does it take to uninstall and remove SmartBoards & install the monitors?
Posted by:The contractor plans to complete the removal and installation in each classroom completely in one night. One day you will have a SmartBoard and the next day you will have a TV. There will be no downtime without any device.
-
Will the beams behind old SmartBoards be removed and will they be in the same location?
Posted by:When possible, the monitors will be mounted on the existing beam in the same location as the SmartBoard. Maintenance will not be doing any of this work. This is a large scale project that requires an outside contractor to complete the entire installation.
